The promotion of physical activity in persons with severe mental disorders: 
The example of the “Mental Health on the Move” project

The goal of this lecture is to present a community-based research project “Mental Health on the Move” aiming to promote the physical and mental health of people with severe mental disorders through physical activity.

Methodological approaches and strategies to support the participants will be described as well as the main findings of linked research.

Finally, suggestions and recommendations will be shared to allow the replication of good practices in the field of physical activity and mental health.

Dr. Maria Paula Maia dos Santos
Assistant Professor with Habilitation
Faculty of Sport, University of Porto, Portugal

She’s Assistant Professor with Habilitation at Faculty of Sports, University of Porto, researcher in the Research Centre in Physical Activity Health and Leisure (CIAFEL), also member of the Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR), Porto, Portugal.

Her research interests are related to physical activity and health promotion. She is particularly interested in understanding how the urban environment shapes peoples’ physical activity and other health behavior, specially commuting to work and school by active modes of transport (walking and cycling).
In teaching, Maria Paula works at undergraduate and postgraduate level. She is the director of the Master course in Physical Activity, Exercise and Health. She values participatory methodologies and tries to include projects of physical activity promotion for the community. She is coordinator of a community intervention program of physical exercise for the elderly.

The goal of this lecture is to introduce active commuting as a source of Physical activity and the relationships of this particular health behavior with physical and mental health.

Moreover, we’ll present the most common measures for this behaviors and good practices for community-intervention programs to increase active commuting in children and adolescents.
